'Big' Battlefield 4 news teased on eve of Xbox 720 event

Official Twitter account for first-person shooter series says "big announcements are coming soon"; reveal event to last one hour.
The official Battlefield Twitter account has teased that "big" news about Battlefield 4 is coming soon, as Microsoft's next-generation reveal event kicks off in under 24 hours.

"Big announcements are coming soon!" the tweet reads.

No specific mention of the Xbox reveal event was made, but Microsoft and EA are rumored to announce a partnership at the reveal event that will see certain EA content released first on the next Xbox before launching on other platforms.

In addition, Microsoft's director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb today confirmed that the Xbox 720 reveal event will last one hour. By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement event in February spanned just over two hours.

GameSpot will be in attendance at the Xbox 720 event, during which Microsoft will share its vision for the future of games and entertainment. This includes first looks at Call of Duty: Ghosts, a next-generation FIFA title, and EA Sports' new UFC game.

Microsoft's Next Xbox Announcement: What to Expect

Microsoft will announce the highly anticipated next-generation Xbox gaming console Tuesday from its Redmond, Wa., headquarters, and the company has set a high bar, considering the success of its current model. The Xbox 360 has been a force to be reckoned with since its debut at the end of 2005. It remains at the top of sales charts even now
What can we expect from Tuesday's event? We cut through the rumor onslaught to provide you with our predictions.
What's in a Name?
The next Xbox's name has been one of the most heavily speculated details, and it seems the crowd cannot agree on a favorite. The new Xbox is codenamed "Durango," all sources agree, but it's unlikely the retail name. The slightly uncreative "Xbox 720," the rotational iteration following a 360, is probably the hottest search term related to the new Xbox. We're gathering just outside of Microsoft's HQ for what is looking like it'll be a day full of excitement, culminating in the "special unveiling" of a "New Generation." It'll be the next Xbox for sure, replacing the venerable Xbox 360 that has been giving us gaming joy (and occasionally frustration) since way back in 2005. Will this new unit be powerful enough to stay relevant for that long, too? Or, will this be the generation when Sony takes back the lead? Join us at the link below at 1:00pm ET tomorrow!

Updated: E3 2013: what to expect from this year's show

The three E's of E3 stand for the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Hosted by the Entertainment Software Association, or ESA, it's an annual sneak peek at what's in store for the videogames industry for next year. But enough dry details, this E3 2013 promises to be the most revelatory in years. Why? Because of the coming console war. Sony's PlayStation 4 is about to square off against the Xbox 720, or whatever Microsoft names it, for living room supremacy. But those aren't the only horses in the race. Nintendo's Wii U is already on the track, though Nintendo already revealed it's staging a semi-E3 hold out. And then let's not forget PC gaming and its de facto dark horse, the Steam Box by Valve.YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x06SOTQrgZAWhat thrills, spills and chills will await us E3 2013? None can be too certain, but we have some predictions for what you'll see on stage and around the showfloor. So read our list, mull it over, have your say in the comments and check back June 11-13 for TechRadar's E3 coverage from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Here's the latest we've heard about the conference:1. Xbox plans press event for June 10Props to Microsoft for keeping its word on an Xbox-themed event for E3 - not that we ever doubted it would happen. The company sent out invites to a press briefing for June 10 in Los Angeles, one day before E3 officially gets underway. This is decided an Xbox event, and we hope to "continue the conversation" on the company's new Xbox following its May 21 happening. We'll be there to cover the action live, so do please check back in for more. Read more about Microsoft's June 10 event2. No Nintendo press conferenceNintendo has made the somewhat surprising decision to forgo its usual E3 press conference in favor of hosting a smaller, closed-doors events to focus primarily on software. "We have decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past," said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. "Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the US market."We must say we're a bit bothered by Nintendo's decision, if only in an altruistic way because it stands to loose some serious ground to competitors Sony and Microsoft. We'll see what Nintendo decides to show, but it will certainly lose out on a lot of E3 buzz.Granted, we're not complete Nintendo naysayers. Its newest console is not next gen, but it's not bad either. We gave it a three and a half stars in our Wii U review. The GamePad is cool, and finally seeing Mario in HD is a welcome uptick. However, most of the world is for PS4 and 720, or just sticking with their Xbox, as the nearly eight-year-old Xbox 360 sold four times as many units as the Wii U did last month. In fact, even the old Wii is selling better. We know Nintendo has some game titles on the way and we hope it can build enough excitement around these titles to carry it into its next big offering. Whenever that happens. 3. Microsoft to reveal more on the Xbox 720Microsoft has a very big Xbox announcement planned for May 21, where we fully expect the new Xbox will be revealed. Whether we actually see the new console or only hear about it (a la the PS4), we won't know until the day of, but what we do know is that Microsoft is saving some more news for E3. "With E3 only a couple of months away, we look forward to sharing more shortly," Microsoft CFO Peter Klein uttered during a company earnings call on April 18 as he spoke about the growth of the Xbox and Xbox live. Then, a few days later, the company revealed it has an #XboxReveal event planned for May but will "continue the conversation at E3" and showcase a full line-up of blockbuster games at the show. Beyond game titles and the potential of seeing the device, there's a chance Microsoft may use E3 to introduce a new Xbox 360 platform or a less-frill filled Xbox Mini, but we think the Xbox 720 will be the real star here.

Microsoft's new Xbox tipped to conquer cloud streaming

Microsoft's next Xbox console is poised to go toe-to-toe with Sony's PlayStation 4, and a new report out over the weekend claimed that cloud streaming will be one of the major battlefields between the two systems. The new Xbox console will feature significant cloud streaming capabilities, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. The console, codenamed "Durango," will be able to stream gameplay from Microsoft data centers and send players' button presses right back, effectively streaming games over the internet, similar to what game streaming services like OnLive and Gaikai (last year purchased by Sony) do.This functionality could allow the new Xbox to play older Xbox 360 games without having to include extra hardware bells and whistles, providing backward compatibility without extra cost. One day leftThe WSJ described new Xbox prototypes with game streaming capabilities that are in development at Microsoft, according to the always reliable "people familiar with the matter."Microsoft has reportedly been cautious about jumping head-first into game streaming like Sony has, but the new Xbox console will indeed boast it as a feature, those sources said. The ability to play older Xbox games on the next Xbox will surely be a boon for fans of Microsoft's game consoles, though it remains to be seen exactly how or if such a feature could be implemented.Of course, we'll know for sure tomorrow when the new Xbox is revealed.Looking backwardSony's PS4 will use Gaikai's technology in a variety of ways, and the company hinted when it announced the new console in February that it will eventually be able to play older games via streaming.Recent consoles, including certain hardware versions of Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3, have featured spotty backward compatibility or lacked it entirely, which has rankled some fans. But these consoles have proved that a lack of backward compatibility is by no means a hindrance to success in the console hardware market.Want more news on the new Xbox?
PlayStation 4 hardware teased by Sony hours before next Xbox unveil

Sony publishes 39 second video showing obscured shots of the PlayStation 4 hardware; full unveil at E3 2013.
Sony has teased shots of the PlayStation 4 hardware hours before Microsoft is due to announce its next-generation Xbox.

The 39-second video shows a blurred black box, which is presumably the PlayStation 4 hardware, along with numerous quick, close-up shots of various parts of the hardware. "See it First at E3," says the video.

Shots in the trailer show close-ups of angular corners, vents, and a circular edge. The Dual Shock 4 controller can also be seen.

The teaser ends with the time and date of Sony's E3 2013 press conference: June 10 at 18:00 PDT.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 in February, though the hardware was not shown and Sony said its design was not yet finalised. The next-generation console is due to be released globally later in 2013.

Car-maker McLaren Automotive has teased that it may be involved with Microsoft's next-generation presentation tomorrow.

Past games in the Xbox-only Project Gotham Racing and Forza franchises have featured McLaren cars.

A "super life-like" Forza game is reportedly one of many Xbox 720 launch titles, though series developer Turn 10 Studios has yet to detail any future projects. Microsoft recently filed a trademark application for Forzavista.

Microsoft's next-generation reveal event takes place tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. PDT at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. GameSpot will be on-hand at the event.
