Bikes Made From Trash Power Film Festival

A group of students in France crafted wooden, energy-producing stationary bicycles from trash. These novel bikes were recently used to power a film festival screening in St. Étienne.
The whole thing started last year when a group of green-minded engineering students at the School of Mines in Saint-Étienne started an “eco-projections” initiative to show documentary films powered by electricity-generating bikes. They formed a collective called Open Sources and developed several plastic bike prototypes in collaboration with a local design firm.

Prepare for the Cicada Invasion With This Creepy-Crawly Time-Lapse

The cicada swarms are coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop it
You will step on a cicada shell, one will fall in your hair and that buzzing drone will haunt your entire summer. But instead of fearing the creepy crawlers, appreciate this miraculous act of mother nature with a time-lapse by filmmaker Samuel Orr
Orr is determined to change the bad rep these bugs have gotten with this video he's been producing since 2007. He says he became interested in the insects as a child when he found them "scary and mysterious," but changed his perspective after learning more about their lives

"When you find out they can't bite or sting and have no defenses, and live their entire lives underground except for the last few weeks when they come up, it's a little sad," Orr tells Mashable. "All that time waiting, and then the dog eats it, or somebody steps on it. These are amazing animals; just stand back and admire them, and let them live out the last few days they have." Read more...More about Viral Videos, Bugs, Time Lapse, Timelapse, and Watercooler

It's World Turtle Day, hooray! Today, we finally get to celebrate the awesomeness of the shelled reptiles of the planet. These chill dudes really don't get the recognition they deserve, constantly being out-cuted by puppies and cats and singing goats
But we know what's up — turtles are just swell with their rock-hard shells and affinity for helping lost fish

Google uses computer vision and machine learning to index your photos

Tags are so 2008. Google doesn't want you to waste time tagging your photos, except for the people in them. The web giant wants to be able to recognize more abstract concepts like "sunset" or "beach" automatically and attach that metadata without further input. In yet another post I/O update, Google+ photos now uses computer vision and machine learning to identify objects and settings in your uploaded snapshots. You can simply search for "my photos of trees" or "Tim's photos of bikes" and get surprisingly accurate results, with nary a manually-added tag in sight. You can perform the searches in Google+, obviously, but you can also execute your query from the standard Google search page. It's pretty neat, but sadly Mountain View seems to have forgotten what cats looking like.

Google Trekker to put the Galapagos Islands on Street View, one tortoise at a time

Google's Street View Trekker has already captured some dramatic scenery in its young life, but we haven't seen it venture far beyond US borders. The company is making up for that in style through its recently completed image-gathering expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The visit will produce 360-degree shots of 10 representative areas chosen by the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Parks Directorate. There's more involved than just stunning Google Maps imagery, however: the panoramas will help document any threats to the local climate and wildlife. While we'll only see the results of the Galapagos trip later this year, it's good to know that they should help both humans and slow-moving reptiles in equal measure.

NVIDIA releases GeForce GTX 780 for $649, claims more power with less fan noise

It's well over a year since the GTX 680 came out, but given how that card was a strong contender it may feel too early for an upgrade. NVIDIA knows the score, which is why it's made a particular point of pitching this year's card at owners of the GTX 580 instead. Upgraders from that GPU are pledged a 70 percent lift in performance, which is about double the gain a GTX 680 owner would see. On the other hand, something more people might notice -- if NVIDIA's slides prove to accurate -- is a 5dBA drop in noise pollution, as well new a approach to fan control that attracts less attention by varying revs less wildly in response to load. This is surprising given that most of the extra performance in this card stems from more transistors and greater power consumption, but that's what we're told. Feel free to hold out for our round-up of independent reviews or read past the break for further details.Gallery: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 slide deck

Warrior Web from DARPA aims to boost muscles, reduce fatigue and injury (video)

The U.S. Military's dabbled with full-on robotic suits in the past, but it's now looking at a less convoluted, more energy-efficient approach. A project called Warrior Web from DARPA aims to enhance soldier carrying capacity and minimize injuries by distributing loads better, providing better joint support and "reapply(ing) energy to enhance motion." Such a suit would be equipped with sensors to detect forces, and be able to fit beneath existing uniforms while consuming only 100W of juice. The U.S. Army has nearly completed five months of prototype testing using a multi-camera motion capture system (see the video after the break) to develop critical tech. The next step will be to design and fabricate a suit ready for real-world testing, which should happen in the fall -- assuming the program keeps its footing.
