Bloomberg: Next Surface RT will use Qualcomm chip, may come in multiple versions

How's about this for a coincidence? We've just benchmarked the Snapdragon 800 reference tablet, with some very nice results, and now Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft will use a Qualcomm chip in its next refresh of the Surface RT. The report, based on insider sources, doesn't stretch to detailing whether we'll be looking at the flagship 800 processor specifically, but that'd seem like a logical upgrade for the current hybrid which runs on NVIDIA's Tegra 3 and already feels underpowered. As for NVIDIA, the same unconfirmed report suggests that they'll still have a role to play as a supplier "for some versions" of Microsoft's product. That's a curious notion, because it implies we might see multiple iterations of the Surface RT to suit different price points or markets (e.g., those with or without LTE), and at least one version of those could house a Tegra 4. Or it could simply be a diplomatic way of saying that the existing RT products will continue to be sold and supported for a while. Either way, if Microsoft doesn't implement the full force of Snapdragon, someone else hopefully will.

Good News: Voice Memos Is Coming Back To iOS 7 – Bad News: It Has An Ugly New Icon

Last week, we pointed out the absence of the Voice Memos app in the first iOS 7 beta, which was released by Apple to developers shortly after its WWDC 2013 keynote address. But as rightly noted by my colleague Jamie, considering that we’re looking at iOS 7 in beta, it’s likely that Apple will bring the missing app back in the next beta versions and in the final version for public release this fall.
Indeed, Apple’s release notes for the first iOS 7 beta suggest that Voice Memos will make a comeback in upcoming seeds:
Voice Memos – Known Issues
The VoiceMemos app is not available in this seed.
It’s also worth noting that Voice Memos is included in the list of apps under Settings > General > Usage > Show all Apps in iOS 7, albeit with an icon that merely shows the new grid system that Apple has created for iOS 7.
Apparently, though, when Voice Memos gets restored in a future iOS 7 beta release, it will come with a new app icon that, dare I say, is even uglier than Safari’s new app icon.
Introduced in iOS 4.0, Voice Memos underwent a drastic icon makeover with the release of iOS 4.2. From its original skeuomorphic microphone icon, it switched to a plain white microphone icon, which could easily go alongside iOS 7′s redesigned stock app icons with a bit of “flattening.”
But as shown in the image above, which was taken by a MacRumors tipster from a WWDC developer session video, Voice Memos has an entirely different icon on iOS 7. Instead of some sort of a representation of a microphone, the icon now shows a sound wave … an ugly sound wave.
Let’s hope that icon gets improved, along with the Voice Memos app itself, before iOS 7 gets released in its final public version this fall.

Apple Seeks Next-Gen Software Feedback From Retail Staff, Cupertino Locals

Following its OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 announcements last week, Apple has started offering preview copies of the forthcoming Mac software to Apple Retail Store employees, and is soliciting feedback from Cupertino locals on iOS 7, according to a new report from 9to5Mac.
Both on-floor and Genius Bar staff in Apple Retail Stores have received emails inviting them to try out OS X Mavericks ahead of its official launch, later this year. Though feedback on the software is of course welcomed by Apple, the company is careful to add that this is “not an expectation of your job.”
The email reads:
You are invited to participate in the pre-release OS X Mavericks seed program. Participation, including submitting feedback, is completely voluntary and not an expectation of your job.
If you accept, we will provide you with a pre-release version of OS X Mavericks to install and use. You will get to preview all of the exciting new features like iBooks, Maps, Calendar, Safari, iCloud Keychain, Multiple Displays, Notifications, Finder Tabs, Tags, and much more! You should use OS X Mavericks only your personal computer and on your personal time. Apple will provide you with ways to submit feedback on your experiences with OS X Mavericks, should you choose to do so. Apple also asks that you use future builds of OS X Mavericks as they are made available.
The responses from prior seed programs have been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Apple is also said to have offered OS X Mavericks to its “outside” AppleSeed group, in a bid to thoroughly test the software before it launches in the Mac App Store this fall.
More curious, however, is 9to5Mac’s note that Apple is currently in the process of soliciting feedback on iOS 7 from locals living in the Cupertino, Calif. area. “Apple has conducted similar programs in the past for specific, major software features, but rarely holds such previews for whole major operating system releases,” the website explains.
Though it’s currently not known how the Cupertino-based testers have been selected, sources suggest that they may be family members of Apple employees.
Over the course of the next few months, Apple will be releasing beta updates for iOS 7, and it’s likely that developer comments potentially combined with the aforementioned Cupertino-based feedback will result in minor changes being made to the forthcoming mobile OS.
Already, one particularly problematic bug concerning the software’s Lock screen has been located in iOS 7 beta 1. This, and more, will presumably be corrected in the second beta release of the mobile operating system.
Below, we’ve included a screenshot of the aforementioned email sent to Apple Retail Store employees:

HTC Butterfly s revealed: 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, UltraPixel camera sensor (video)

HTC's just pulled back the proverbial curtains on the Butterfly s at its Taiwan launch event. It'll arrive boasting an identical-sounding 5-inch 1080p display, front-facing BoomSound stereo speakers and Sense 5 as expected. When it comes to internals, the Butterfly s runs Android Jelly Bean on a quad-core 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 (faster than the HTC One), a 3,200mAh battery, quad-band HSPA/WCDMA radio, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, expandable once again through microSD. As for imaging, alongside that primary UltraPixel camera and Zoe software features, there's a 2.1-megapixel wide-angle shooter on the front. It's currently scheduled for a release in July in Taiwan, accompanied by a NT $22,900 (roughly $766) price tag, but no word when (or even if) it'll reach foreign shores.
