Shazam for iOS updated with Pulse discovery feature, redesigned tab bar on iPhone

It's been a mere few weeks since Shazam introduced those new location-based and tagging features for the tablet version of its iOS app, but the music-driven service isn't stopping there. Reaching version 6.1 on Apple's platform, today Shazam's universal application is bringing a few more tidbits to both the iPhone and iPad. Handset users, for one, will notice speedier load times within the app and a rather fresh look that focuses on displaying more info on the tab bar -- such as friend tags and chart updates. On the bigger screen, Shazam says it's improved things by allowing users to more easily delete tags from Favorites and by adding under-the-hood tweaks which should make for a smoother experience while browsing the Friends feed.

The bigger news, perhaps, is Shazam Pulse, a music discovery tool that's making its way to the iOS app, one which allows folks to quickly see and sample the music currently being tagged by people. It's worth nothing all these new features are available for Shazam and Shazam Encore, so fret not if you have one or the other.

Why Was Apple Late To The PRISM Party?

If there’s one striking thing about those PRISM slides, other than their hideous aesthetics, it’s that Apple’s allocated yellow oval, instead of a date, has the words “(added Oct 2012)” underneath it. That difference is most striking when you consider the fact that Apple competitor Microsoft cooperated with the government a full five years earlier.
The company, which denies ever having heard of PRISM, released its FISA request numbers today, starting on December 1st, 2012 through this May 2013. Though it’s plausible that the government would not have disclosed the name of the program, the NYT confirmed Apple’s participation in a government surveillance network designed to make data collection more efficient for the NSA — whatever that entails, like “a broad sweep for intelligence, like logs of certain search terms.”
From Claire Cain Miller’s article:
While handing over data in response to a legitimate FISA request is a legal requirement, making it easier for the government to get the information is not, which is why Twitter could decline to do so.
The October 2012 date is notable as coming a year after the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Perhaps, because it is an interesting coincidence, it’s led to speculation that Steve Jobs resisted systematic data collection from the NSA until his death. That statement was echoed on the record by NeXt developer Andrew Stone, who told Cult of Mac, “Steve Jobs would’ve rather died than give into that, even though he had a lot of friends at the NSA. Microsoft caved in first, then everyone else. Steve would’ve just never done it.”
The speculation, which I’ve heard from a couple of sources, has grounds. NeXT was publicly a vendor for the NSA and many other security agencies, and Jobs had many contacts at the agency who perhaps had offered him immunity. It could be that his connections, Apple’s brand popularity or straight-up his legend allowed him to escape Microsoft’s, which had been embroiled in a series of antitrust cases up until then, or Yahoo’s fate.
All of these explanations make sense, though it could be something like the Twitter loophole that caused Apple’s tardiness. In Twitter’s case most of its data is public, so it’s not that big of a loss to the NSA until it becomes more of a communication node. Perhaps only recently did Apple collect the kinds of data the government would want, like the meta data around iMessage, which, though encrypted, doesn’t pass the “pud muddle” test.
We will likely never know what Jobs did in those last few years as PRISM loomed ever larger, but whatever he did it looks like he held out as long as he could. The image of Steve Jobs playing chicken with Uncle Sam fits right into his myth. Even if it is just a myth.

Today’s Best Apps: Morning And Eventiles

The App Store takes delivery of hundreds of new apps per day. The overwhelming scene makes it possible to easily overlook an exciting game, valuable productivity suite, etc. However, we have a solution. Today’s Best Apps tackles this problem by providing you with a handpicked and tested list of apps that are truly worth your consideration each and everyday.
Remember: Even though in-app purchases typically require your iTunes Store password for processing, you can further prevent them and other unauthorized actions by enabling local restrictions using the passcode locked iOS parental controls.
iPhone:
Eventiles by Eventiles, Inc. (Free, 2.4 MB): This photo-centric social app and network make it easy and fun to share great moments frozen in time. So, what’s different from other choices? The app automatically groups photos into collage-style albums based on captured day and time as well as location. Providing another helping hand, simple titles are entered automatically, such as “Afternoon in Phoenix” or “That’s Philadelphia,” but a few great customization options are available to make things perfectly personal. In addition to changing the title, you may add a description, try a random new layout, apply one of eight filter effects, delete or merge albums, and deselect chosen photos or select more photos, if desired. As for the social aspect, discover what others are up to in the Friends feed, plus share your own eventiles through Twitter and Facebook or privately via an email invitation. Beautifully presented, the message contains a preview poster of the eventile, which is linked to an interactive page with options to see photos in fullscreen, comment, and more. Registration of a free account is required to share, comment, “like” eventiles, however, management of your own content and viewing are open to guests.

iPad:
Morning — Weather, To-Do, News, and more by Tamper ($2.99, 4.6 MB): Increase productivity by starting each and every day with this dashboard-style task management app. It’s your choice as to what’s important. For each of the six panels, two large and four smaller, there’s the choice displaying the date and time, weather, stocks, news, to-dos via the Reminders or Calendar app, event countdown timer, and even the commute time based on traffic information. Reorganizing is as simple as drag-and-drop to move and a couple of taps to select a different panel type. In addition, certain panels support multiple items, such as stocks, that are quickly browsed using left and right swipes. The app features a simplistically attractive flat user interface with fold out toolbar, and six color theme choices.

AppAdvice App Of The Week For June 17, 2013

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!
Palette – Life in Color
Get color themes from everyday objects with our App of the Week!
Ever need some color themes in your life, for a project you’re working on? Then our App of the Week should get the job done quickly and easily: Palette – Life in Color.
This app sports a simple and sleek interface that will fit right in with iOS 7 when it is released. Everything in the app is straightforward, and incredibly intuitive to use. While it may be minimal, it’s not bland or boring, as it features some texture and depth in the overall interface.
The app will feature some color schemes for you already, but it is easy to create your own. Just tap on the camera button and take a snap of whatever it is you want to create a color theme from. Palette will generate a grid of color swatches with the colors that are in your image. You can change the grid to one of three choices: 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4, so you can keep it simple or have something more complex.
Each grid will provide you with the color hex codes for each individual swatch, as well as the RGB and HSL values. If you tap on individual colors, you are able to use multitouch gestures to change lightness, saturation, and hue. Going back to the original color is easy thanks to the undo button.
When you’re satisfied with your theme, it’s saved automatically, but you can give it a name for easy reference later. These can also be emailed to others or yourself for later.
We’ve been enjoying the simplicity of this app, while also appreciating the bit of power that this app provides for the task at hand. You can get Palette – Life in Color in the App Store for your iPhone for $0.99.

Honorable Mention
Whisper for App.net
Add some flair to your App.net chats with Whisper for App.net.
If you’re on App.net, you will love our Honorable Mention pick for the week, which provides a fun new way of chatting with your friends on the ad-free social network: Whisper for App.net.
This gorgeous app is brought to you by the same people behind Riposte, so you know it looks good, especially on your Retina iPhone screens. Think of it as iMessage for ADN.
The main screen will show off all of your current PMs in their own gorgeous bar, complete with the avatars and names of those who are involved in the current thread. Whisper supports individual one-on-one chats, as well as group chats with multiple people at once. Refresh the PM list with pull-to-refresh, and tap on individual threads to open them. To start a new PM, just tap on the + button and find the people you want to send a message to — Whisper will search usernames and deliver results in real-time.
Chats allow all participants to send messages up to 256 characters in length (like a normal post), and the character count is revealed after two full lines of text. Of course, the real fun with Whisper are the special features that you can send along with your message: Photos, Stickers, Nearby Place, or Your Location.
Whisper supports photos, which appear in-line just like you see in iMessage. These can either be new captures or imported from your photo library, and it will be uploaded to ADN’s file storage service.
Stickers are little emoticons that are unique to Whisper, and you can send these to your friends instead of text (they will only show up in Whisper, however, not other ADN apps or on the web). These are fun and add some flair to chats, since you can send Grumpy Cat, the CSI Miami meme, and more. There are only two pages at the moment, but hopefully more stickers are coming in the future.
The Nearby Places and Your Location features will send locations to your friends, with data provided by Google Maps. Nearby Places will display business names, addresses, phone numbers, and links to websites when available, so it’s great to give this info to friends you want to hang out with. Your Location will only show your location on a map, in case your friends are wondering where you currently are.
Whisper is minimal and relies on gestures mostly for navigation. Swipe to the right to go back to the chat list. Any other direction and you will bring up timestamps in a chat. Tapping on the bottom where your account name is will bring up the Settings and the Pro Upgrade option. Pro will give you multiple accounts, full-size images (free will scale things down in half), more typefaces (default is Avenir Next), screen brightness gesture, dark mode, and auto-dark mode. This is all available through an in-app purchase of $4.99. There are still some settings available even if you remain on the free version.
We have fallen in love with Whisper for App.net for chatting with others, and we highly recommend checking it out if you send PMs constantly on ADN. You can get Whisper for App.net for free in the App Store for your iPhone.

Samsung mass producing new MacBook Air SSDs for other notebooks

Announced last week during WWDC 2013, Apple's new MacBook Air will make use of a new solid state drive from Samsung. The MacBook Air will be available with new Haswell chips, as well as being offered with either a 128GB XP941 SSD or a 256GB version. However, the MacBook Air won't be the only notebook for which Samsung will provide its new XP941 SSDs, as Monday the Korean manufacturer announced plans to mass produce the drives for plenty of other vendors. There will be three versions available, with a 512GB version joining the aforementioned SSDs being used in the new MacBook Air.Smaller, faster, better, strongerAs the first PCI-Express (PCIe) SSD, the XP941 is not only smaller than other current SATA SSDs, it's also faster. The diminutive stature of the XP941 is what enabled Apple to improve the MacBook Air's battery life without ditching storage space.According to Samsung, the new SSD can read 500GB of data in six minutes, which puts it at nearly seven times faster than a standard hard drive, and 2.5 times faster than a SATA SSD."With the Samsung XP941, we have become the first to provide the highest performance PCIe SSD to global PC makers so that they can launch leading-edge ultra-slim notebook PCs this year," Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president for memory sales and marketing at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement.Samsung hasn't revealed which other companies will be bearing the new SSDs, but did say some manufacturers have already received them, with more coming as the year rolls on.How does the new MacBook Air stand up?
